The Kiwanis Club of Wellington teamed up with the Wellington Union Cemetery Board of Trustees to plant a 165-foot pollinator garden along Cemetery Road that promotes bee growth and provides safety for staff members. The garden was planted along a steep incline that was difficult and unsafe to mow, especially if conditions were wet. The project was done in conjunction with the Ohio Kiwanis District’s first family project – “Bee a Hero” to promote pollinators and bee growth. Kiwanis matched a $500 grant it received from the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation, plus used money raised from a basket raffle at last month’s Lorain County Beekeeper’s event at the Town Hall. Someone had to step up! Now, when we pass the Wellington Village entrance signs on Herrick Ave. and South Main, we actually read the signs without obstructions. The Chamber of Commerce used to maintain the signs but they closed their doors a couple years ago. Shrubs need pruned and the planters needed weeded. Grass had grown to three feet in front of the not-for-profit sign on Route 18 West. On Tuesday night, members of the Wellington Kiwanis Club and the Cub Scout Pack from Sullivan took to weeding, trimming, mulching and weed-whacking around the Route 18 East and W. Herrick Ave. signs.
