Patriotism is on full display in the Village of Wellington as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this week. The Wellington Kiwanis’ Parade of Flags, now in its sixth year, has grown 10 percent in the past year to 305 U.S flags, not including the beautiful patriotic displays at Village Market, Apples and Herrick Memorial Library. Archibald Willard would be proud to see the Spirit of '76 is alive and well in his hometown. Featured sponsors for Independence Day include Mayor Hans Schneider and his wife Wendy at Union School Park: Council President Gene Hartman and Beth Hannon at the Town Hall on the square and Harrison Ford on North Main St. Additional displays are the Wellington Masons at Pioneer Cemetery on W. Herrick Ave. ; the VFW at Duke Pride Hill at Barb O’Keefe Way at the North Main St. grade separation; and American Legion Post 8 at the Vietnam Memorial. Proceeds from the Parade of Flags support Kiwanis’ playground fund, which has surpassed $100,000. The fundraising thermometer at Union School Park has grown to nearly $1 million.
