On September 22, every third-grade student in the Wellington school district received a dictionary compliments of Wellington Kiwanis. This student dictionary includes over 150 pages of supplemental information in the back, including the Constitution of the U.S., the Declaration of Independence, brief biographies of all of the U.S. presidents, world maps, and information about all 50 states, countries of the world and planets in our solar system. sign language, braille and the longest word in the English language.
Third grade teachers were gifted with a Word Teasers game as a tool for their students to improve their skills in using the dictionary.
These two belong in the K-Kids Hall of Fame. At our annual Service Leadership Program picnic Thursday, we honored retiring Westwood Elementary third grade teacher Cathy Kurtz. Wellington Board of Education member and Kiwanian Ayers Ratliff helped found K-Kids 16 years ago along with his wife and elementary school teacher Nancy Ratliff. Mrs. Kurtz has been our long-time K-Kids Advisor, following in the footsteps of Westwood teacher Nancy Ratliff and Cindy Kodosky.
