Our fund-raising includes Pancake Day, usually held in February or March on a Friday. Plans are to use proceeds from this breakfast to purchase playground equipment. In 2018 we started a new tradition by sponsoring the State of Wellington breakfast with Mayor Hans Schneider and Wellington Schools’ Superintendent (and Kiwanian) Ed Weber provide an overview of the previous year and outline their goal for the coming year. Each August, we sell admission tickets at the Lorain County Fair. We also have our annual Morris Furcron Peterson Nut Sale in the fall. The past two years, the community has supported by Kiwanis in this effort with sales totaling more than $10,000.
These two belong in the K-Kids Hall of Fame. At our annual Service Leadership Program picnic Thursday, we honored retiring Westwood Elementary third grade teacher Cathy Kurtz. Wellington Board of Education member and Kiwanian Ayers Ratliff helped found K-Kids 16 years ago along with his wife and elementary school teacher Nancy Ratliff. Mrs. Kurtz has been our long-time K-Kids Advisor, following in the footsteps of Westwood teacher Nancy Ratliff and Cindy Kodosky. We held our annual end of the year Service Leadership Program picnic at the Wellington Community Recreation Park Thursday to honor our Wellington High Key Club, McCormick Middle School Builders Club and Westwood Elementary K-Kids.
